How to write an App for Appa Apps

If you would like to write an app for Appa Apps, please follow this procedure:

Choose a subject

Ideally something that you are interested in and which might be of use to people learning English as a second language.

  1. Cathedrals
  2. Kitchen Utensils
  3. Clothing

Please feel free to ask if you have an idea that you like but are unsure of.

Make a list

Make a list of items in the subject area. Thus for Kitchen Utensils:

  1. Knife
  2. Spoon
  3. Bowl

Go to Flickr and find interesting pictures of the items in your list that have can be used commercially, i.e. search with "Commercial Use" on.

For each picture you find, record its URL under the corresponding item in your list. You could of course take photos of items around you and upload them to Flickr and then use them.

Write a description

This step is optional.

Either, write two or three short and interesting facts about each item, one per line, the shorter the better, such as "Strains cooked spaghetti". Wikipedia can be very useful for finding unusual and interesting facts about things.

Or write a short rhyme about the item: "I was seen in the sea by a shark that saw me". Extra points for alliteration.

Or do not do this step!

If you can, record yourself saying the name of each item and reading the facts or rhyme about them. If you do not have the capability to do this, do not worry, I will do it for you.

If possible, please say each word or phrase at least three times. I will be happy to post process this sound file and cut out the individual words (and send them back to you for your own use if you wish) so there is no need for you to do this part unless you want to. If some words do not come out well from any of the three recorded versions I will send you a re-record list.

You might record either on an Android device or on a Computer.

Please record everything in one more files using the free version of: Easy Voice Recorder and send the resulting .wav file(s) to: Appa Apps.

Please record everything in one file, ideally at 44.1KHz, 32 bit float, mono in mp3 format using: Audacity and send the resulting file(s) to: Appa Apps.

Send it to me!

When you have found your pictures and written your rhymes and perhaps recorded them, please send them to me and I will put them through the Appa Apps production line to convert your information into an app which will then be uploaded to Google Play, AmazonApp Store, Nook etc..

Remember, one is doing this for pleasure not work. So there are no deadlines, everything else that might be more important is more important, if you have questions, please ask them, if you decide to stop and do something else, no-one will be offended.
